Where to Run an Always-On AI Agent: 2026 Comparison

Run your always-on agent somewhere that stays awake and stays yours: a machine you control, powered on, with a model bill you chose. For most people that narrows to three real answers — the computer you already own, a small always-on box, or a cheap server — and the deciding factor is almost never raw performance.

It is whether the thing is awake when the task is due, and who can read the memory it builds.

The three questions that actually decide it

  1. Does it stay awake? An agent's value is concentrated in tasks that must fire at a specific time — a briefing before you wake up, a price check while you sleep. A machine that sleeps on a lid-close schedule will silently miss them.
  2. Who can read the memory? Your agent's notes are the most personal dataset you will ever generate: your calendar, your mail, your family's logistics. Local storage is a different proposition from a vendor's cloud, and it is the one axis you cannot retrofit later.
  3. What does a month cost? Not the hardware — the running cost. Hosting is a rounding error; the model tokens are the bill, and a scheduled agent spends them while you are not watching.

The honest summary: the first three keep your data, the fourth keeps your uptime, the fifth keeps your convenience. Pick two.

The hardware moment is real

The category got its clearest signal in September 2026, when Minisforum used IFA in Berlin to announce two machines built for exactly this job — per Tom's Hardware:

  • AI Agent NAS N5 Max-P495 — an upgrade of a flagship NAS that shipped with OpenClaw pre-installed earlier in the year, with up to 200TB of local storage and the ambition of being "a centralized backend for data, models, knowledge and long-running AI workloads".
  • MS-S1 Max-P495 — a mini workstation with AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495, up to 131 TOPS, and up to 192GB of unified memory, of which up to 160GB can be allocated to graphics.

Both had no announced price or availability at the show, and the same coverage notes that Mac minis and Mac Studios are in short supply because local AI demand has absorbed them. Whatever you think of a NAS as an agent host, the naming is the news: hardware vendors now sell boxes for agents by name.

One number from that coverage is worth keeping in mind — Minisforum's claim that agentic workloads can consume up to 1,000× the tokens of ordinary AI use. Treat it as a vendor figure. The direction is not in doubt, which is why the next section matters more than the machine.

The arithmetic nobody does

The running cost of the box is trivial. If a small always-on machine averages 10 W, it draws:

10 W × 24 h × 365 days = 87.6 kWh per year
87.6 kWh × $0.15 per kWh ≈ $13 per year

(Illustrative: your power draw and electricity price will differ. The point is the order of magnitude.)

Thirteen dollars a year to have an agent that never misses a scheduled task. Then compare it with what the same agent spends on tokens for those tasks — that is the number that will actually decide whether you keep the automation off or leave it on. Routing cheap work to cheap models matters far more than which box you buy.

What "never sleeps" is worth in practice

  • A morning briefing that is already in your messages when you wake, built from your calendar and the mail that mattered — the guide is here.
  • A price watch that checks while shops are quiet and pings you once, not every hour.
  • A monthly audit — the subscription sweep, the expense sheet, the digest of what changed.
  • A family helper everyone can text without waiting for your laptop to be open.

None of those fail because your hardware is slow. They fail because the machine was asleep. That is the entire argument for separating the agent from your laptop, and it applies whether you buy a mini PC, rent a $5 server, or leave a desktop on in the corner. Choose where your agent lives by asking what has to happen while you are asleep, and who you are willing to let read the memory that accumulates there. A laptop is fine until the first scheduled task it misses; a $5 server or a small box that stays on fixes that for the price of a coffee a year in electricity — and keeps the running cost where the real money is: the tokens. Buy uptime and privacy, rent convenience, and pick deliberately.
