A bigger context window changes the first thing you notice about an agent: how much you have to re-explain. With context windows crossing the one-million-token mark, an agent can now hold an entire project, your whole inbox for a month, or a long conversation's worth of threading in a single session — and stop losing the plot halfway through.
The context window, briefly
A context window is the amount of text a model can "see" at once — your message, your files, and the conversation so far, all in one go. The bigger it is, the more context the agent carries without forgetting. Anthropic's Claude Opus 5, released July 24, 2026, ships a 1M-token context window — roughly a large book, an entire codebase, or a year of a busy inbox — at the same $5/$25 per-million-token pricing as before, with adaptive thinking enabled by default.
For a while, the practical ceiling was around 200K tokens. Crossing to a million is a step-change, not a linear bump, because it crosses the threshold where an agent can hold the whole task instead of a summary of it.
What it actually changes for you
The differences show up in four places:
1. You stop re-explaining. The old pattern was: agent does half the task, forgets the constraint you gave it, you repeat yourself. With a much larger window, your instructions, the file it's working from, and your edits all stay in view. This is the single biggest day-to-day improvement, and it's the one people feel first.
2. Whole projects, not fragments. Instead of feeding an agent one file at a time, you can point it at a whole repo, doc set, or thread and have it work across all of it. That's the difference between "summarize this email" and "understand this whole case file and draft the response."
3. Better multi-step work. Long agent tasks — research that spans many sources, a multi-part deliverable — used to degrade as the agent ran out of room and compressed its earlier reasoning. With more room, it keeps the thread from the first step to the last.
4. The trade-off: bigger is slower and pricier. A million tokens isn't free. The context window example is behind the framing: more tokens cost more per call and add latency. Used wisely — feed the agent the whole project only when it needs it — it's a superpower. Used wastefully, it's a way to burn tokens re-reading things you could've summarized.
The practical rule
As context windows grow, the skill shifts from compressing context to curating it. You still want to give the agent the right documents, but you no longer have to spoon-feed them one snippet at a time. The best approach:
- Give the agent the full task when it's a single coherent job.
- Keep a summary of the goal pinned so it never drifts.
- Don't dump irrelevant material — a bigger window helps, but clarity of instruction still wins.
That curating instinct is also what separates a good setup from a confusing one. Telling your agent what to automate first and keeping its skills tight matter more than raw window size, because a giant window can't fix a muddled brief.
